It appears that Ariel is still googling information for 4 00:00:22.579 --> 00:00:26.820 her story, but since we know that your time is valuable, I invite 5 00:00:26.859 --> 00:00:30.539 you to join Chad by the Campfire for the story of the Old City Hall 6 00:00:30.940 --> 00:00:36.689 in Tacoma Washington. Down to folk may contain adult themes from time to time. 7 00:00:37.170 --> 00:00:41.369 That's how the fairy tales do. If you are listening with children, 8 00:00:41.850 --> 00:00:58.039 shame on you. Now sit back, relax and enjoy the show. This 9 00:00:58.280 --> 00:01:03.960 week I'd like to talk about the Old City Hall in Tacoma Washington. This 10 00:01:03.709 --> 00:01:10.709 is a ghost story. So the Old City Hall in Tacoma Washington was built 11 00:01:10.750 --> 00:01:15.069 around one thousand eight hundred and ninety three. There's a five story building and 12 00:01:15.390 --> 00:01:19.099 it had a ten story clock tower on the corner. Since it was built, 13 00:01:19.500 --> 00:01:26.659 it was plagued with problems, mostly financial. The building has essentially been 14 00:01:26.859 --> 00:01:33.930 cursed since it was built. The architect that was originally selected for the project 15 00:01:34.290 --> 00:01:38.730 became deathly ill and had to give up the project. Second in line picked 16 00:01:38.769 --> 00:01:44.170 it up completed the project but was in financial ruin by the end of it. 17 00:01:44.689 --> 00:01:49.920 In eighteen ninety six, just three years after constructions started, that designer 18 00:01:49.480 --> 00:01:53.680 was reported missing from his home in San Francisco. He hadn't been seen for 19 00:01:53.799 --> 00:02:00.719 days. A month past, a local newspaper even when as far as publishing 20 00:02:00.760 --> 00:02:05.950 a story a month after his disappearance that he had committed suicide because of the 21 00:02:06.189 --> 00:02:10.909 financial straits he was in after the construction of the Tacoma City Hall. About 22 00:02:10.909 --> 00:02:15.740 a week after that story was published, the suspicions were confirmed. He had 23 00:02:15.900 --> 00:02:22.340 killed himself because of his financial status. The building did operate as a city 24 00:02:22.419 --> 00:02:28.539 hall for many years. There was a jail in the basement, offices ere 25 00:02:28.580 --> 00:02:34.129 typical city office building. It was ultimately replaced by a Sleeker, modern, 26 00:02:34.610 --> 00:02:39.169 more Contemporary City Hall, and our story starts to take shape in the nine 27 00:02:39.530 --> 00:02:46.599 seventies. It had been abandoned for about three months when, in mid April 28 00:02:46.919 --> 00:02:51.840 there was a police call that came in. Local residents were reporting that the 29 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:58.039 fire alarms were going off. Units were called fire dispatch. The entire building 30 00:02:58.199 --> 00:03:01.469 was canvassed and there was no fire. No fire and no one inside, 31 00:03:01.909 --> 00:03:08.909 no sign of any movement whatsoever. No one could figure out why the fire 32 00:03:08.990 --> 00:03:14.259 alarm went off. As all the units packed up and left. After several 33 00:03:14.379 --> 00:03:19.060 hours of investigating why this fire alarm was going off, as they began to 34 00:03:19.139 --> 00:03:23.060 pull away, the fire alarm went off again. This time it was building 35 00:03:23.219 --> 00:03:30.530 wide. Bells ringing, lights flickering in the windows. Every window, lights 36 00:03:30.689 --> 00:03:35.009 on, lights off, bells ringing. They had just left the building, 37 00:03:35.250 --> 00:03:38.650 they had just walked every inch of the building on the inside, but for 38 00:03:38.849 --> 00:03:44.400 some reason no one could get a door open to go back in. Firefighters 39 00:03:44.520 --> 00:03:49.039 used instruments to pry the doors open, chopping at them with axes, and 40 00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:53.319 they still could not get the doors open. A phone call was placed to 41 00:03:53.840 --> 00:03:57.870 the local power company to shut off the grid, to turn off the bells, 42 00:03:58.310 --> 00:04:00.669 to turn off the lights. They discovered then there was no power to 43 00:04:00.789 --> 00:04:04.990 the building. Power lines to the building had been severed months ago. No 44 00:04:05.110 --> 00:04:11.659 one could explain what was powering the fire alarms. No one could plane would 45 00:04:11.740 --> 00:04:15.620 cause the lights to turn on and off. Lots of people have theories. 46 00:04:15.379 --> 00:04:21.139 Some may have been right. In an effort to keep the downtown area vibrant 47 00:04:21.220 --> 00:04:29.290 and alive, they would occasionally go and window washers would occasionally come down to 48 00:04:29.370 --> 00:04:34.449 the Old City Hall and start and wash the windows. Our second story starts 49 00:04:34.449 --> 00:04:38.490 at this point. In one thousand nine hundred and eighty three, there was 50 00:04:38.490 --> 00:04:43.839 a window washer on a scaffold cleaning the windows of an office on the third 51 00:04:43.959 --> 00:04:49.040 floor. And Office, the office that was used by Edward Hatherton, the 52 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:54.750 architect, a committed suicide. He was cleaning the window and saw a man 53 00:04:54.949 --> 00:04:59.230 walking through the room. He quickly got down and called authorities and said there's 54 00:04:59.670 --> 00:05:01.629 a s squatter in the building and need somebody to come and look. They 55 00:05:01.709 --> 00:05:05.550 went through the building. No one was there. In fact, the office 56 00:05:05.910 --> 00:05:11.740 that House the window that this worker was cleaning had, according to reports, 57 00:05:11.779 --> 00:05:15.500 an inch and a half of dust on the floor. No footprints, no 58 00:05:15.660 --> 00:05:21.569 sign of movement. They decided to refurbish the building top to bottom, reinforcing 59 00:05:21.649 --> 00:05:29.170 foundation, loose bricks and replacing windows with double pain storm windows. The hope 60 00:05:29.329 --> 00:05:33.730 is to someday breathe life back into the Old City Hall. Now nearly three 61 00:05:33.810 --> 00:05:41.600 decades have passed since the strange occurrences in the s and s and Old Empty 62 00:05:41.800 --> 00:05:46.560 City Hall is still there and refurbishment's been done. Even replaced all of the 63 00:05:46.600 --> 00:05:54.029 windows with double pained glass in hopes that someday someone would come around and purchase 64 00:05:54.110 --> 00:06:00.029 the building and bring it back to its glory days. Urban exploration is a 65 00:06:00.189 --> 00:06:06.779 big thing on youtube. People are constantly exploring abandoned buildings and Old City Hall 66 00:06:06.939 --> 00:06:12.860 into coma. Washington has kind of become the Mecca for urban exploration because no 67 00:06:12.980 --> 00:06:16.699 one's ever done it in a hundred and thirty years. Is Building has stood 68 00:06:16.699 --> 00:06:21.730 at the corner of a Pacific Avenue and South Seventh Street and Tocoma, Washington. 69 00:06:23.329 --> 00:06:28.410 It's been abandoned for decades and no one's been able to get inside to 70 00:06:28.569 --> 00:06:32.079 explore. The doors are locked. Of course it's an abandoned building. In 71 00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:38.759 my research for this episode I found a chilling Youtube video where an urban explorers 72 00:06:38.920 --> 00:06:44.480 trying to gain access to this building. He's there at night. He's brought 73 00:06:44.639 --> 00:06:48.029 currowbars and sledge hammers, anything he can to get inside, much like the 74 00:06:48.189 --> 00:06:54.110 firefighters that one night he has a twenty foot ladder and he's propped up on 75 00:06:54.750 --> 00:06:58.550 one side of the building and he's trying to open a window. He's he's 76 00:06:58.589 --> 00:07:04.100 hitting it with a five pound sledgehammer. He's he gets down the letterer and 77 00:07:04.139 --> 00:07:10.139 he starts throwing rocks at the window. Nothing is breaking these windows. Nobody 78 00:07:10.259 --> 00:07:14.620 knows why it is like this. It's like it's protected by some kind of 79 00:07:15.579 --> 00:07:19.170 other worldly protection. And that's where this video got crazy. He climbed up 80 00:07:19.209 --> 00:07:25.009 the ladder and was filming. While he was filming into the window, trying 81 00:07:25.089 --> 00:07:30.480 to show what's inside, you see a man running at full speed towards the 82 00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:35.519 window and he smacks up against the window, both hands and his face up 83 00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:41.240 against the window. The youtuber fell off the ladder. He picked himself up 84 00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:45.069 and left. He left the ladder there. Let he just left. Another 85 00:07:45.149 --> 00:07:47.750 video shows him going back and the next day to retrieve his ladder. I'm 86 00:07:47.750 --> 00:07:54.269 assuming schools he dropped it. Goes up the ladder, he positions his cameras 87 00:07:54.269 --> 00:07:59.620 so you can see inside and the sun's shining through the window and kind of 88 00:07:59.660 --> 00:08:03.540 illuminates everything just a little bit and he calls out that on the floor can 89 00:08:03.699 --> 00:08:07.939 see the dust. There's no footprints, no nothing. Then he notices it 90 00:08:09.339 --> 00:08:11.930 and we notice that for the first time, in between the two panes of 91 00:08:13.050 --> 00:08:18.970 glass are two perfect handprints and the side of a man's face trapped. So 92 00:08:20.089 --> 00:08:24.329 what's going to happen with the Old City Hall. In March of two thousand 93 00:08:24.370 --> 00:08:28.600 and nineteen, someone bought the property two million dollars, plus a two million 94 00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:33.440 dollar donation to the city of Tacoma. Over the next ten years, it 95 00:08:33.559 --> 00:08:39.440 took out a loan for fifteen million dollars for the whole project, forty micro 96 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:43.750 apartments, two restaurants, two floors of retail space and a bar in the 97 00:08:43.789 --> 00:08:50.870 basement in the old jail. The plans also included restoration of the clock tower 98 00:08:50.070 --> 00:08:54.509 that has been silent for years. The entire project was set to conclude in 99 00:08:54.669 --> 00:09:01.059 March of two thousand and twenty, restoration of the clock tower to begin in 100 00:09:01.259 --> 00:09:05.580 May, and then a little thing called the coronavirus hit, but until recently 101 00:09:05.940 --> 00:09:09.940 no one actually knew why the project stopped. Before that, you may not 102 00:09:09.129 --> 00:09:15.529 know the buyers name or the person who's ambitious dream this was, but you 103 00:09:15.649 --> 00:09:20.090 know who he is. The person that purchased the old Tacoma City Hall was 104 00:09:20.250 --> 00:09:24.519 the first person in the United States, in February of two thousand and twenty, 105 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:28.600 to be infected with the coronavirus. Everything came to a screeching halt, 106 00:09:30.039 --> 00:09:35.360 occasional fire alarms going off for no reason, and our story ends with the 107 00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:39.710 last occurrence to happen the Old City Hall and to come a Washington has two 108 00:09:39.750 --> 00:09:43.669 thousand and twenty came to a close and two thousand and twenty one entered this 109 00:09:43.830 --> 00:09:50.269 world. At exactly midnight in Tacoma, Washington, the bells on the clock 110 00:09:50.389 --> 00:09:54.379 tower rang. They rang in the New Year for the first time it's sixty 111 00:09:54.419 --> 00:09:58.539 years. For the first time it's sixty years, the clock tower bells rang 112 00:09:58.580 --> 00:10:03.059 in the New Year, even though renovations never started to restore the bell. 113 00:10:03.659 --> 00:10:07.730 The Bells weren't even there. They'd been shipped to Baltimore to be recast by 114 00:10:07.769 --> 00:10:13.210 the original manufacturer. No one knows how it happened, no one can explain 115 00:10:13.250 --> 00:10:16.850 it and we may never know by what we do know is that Tacoma Old 116 00:10:16.970 --> 00:10:24.279 City Hall is a cursed place in someone or something is inside and does not 117 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:35.830 want to be disturbed. Do you hear that? It's the sound of Zach 118 00:10:35.029 --> 00:10:41.789 Bagan's booking the next flight to Washington state. Also, if you listen closely, 119 00:10:41.110 --> 00:10:46.029 you can hear Aeriel questioning her decision to have Chad join her on this 120 00:10:46.230 --> 00:10:52.220 project. Or maybe she's just patiently waiting to tell us another story. I 121 00:10:52.379 --> 00:10:56.940 choose to believe it's the former. In any case, Ariel, take it 122 00:10:56.299 --> 00:11:07.129 and US away. But that, my friends, is not the whole story. 123 00:11:09.250 --> 00:11:13.409 You see, across the country, on the same date, construction on 124 00:11:13.490 --> 00:11:20.200 another town hall began. In Fairfax, Virginia, a budding architect had made 125 00:11:20.200 --> 00:11:26.480 a risky move. He told the purchaser of a plot of land that he 126 00:11:26.639 --> 00:11:31.440 was there to build their town hall. He gambled on the fact that he 127 00:11:31.559 --> 00:11:37.110 would either be laughed off or he would be seen as so confident he must 128 00:11:37.190 --> 00:11:39.990 be the man for the job, and he was assumed to be the latter. 129 00:11:41.789 --> 00:11:46.940 As they were breaking ground, there was a strange object uncovered right in 130 00:11:48.019 --> 00:11:52.740 the center of the spot upon which they were to build. It looked like 131 00:11:52.980 --> 00:11:58.419 a sort of lumpy stone or something, but as they examined it further, 132 00:11:58.139 --> 00:12:03.049 they realized it had teeth on it. Horrified by the discovery, many of 133 00:12:03.129 --> 00:12:09.129 the workers abandoned the project and others refused to be the one to move it, 134 00:12:09.289 --> 00:12:15.409 and so the young architect had to retrieve the item himself before work would 135 00:12:15.409 --> 00:12:20.559 resume. It was hideous, that much could be certain. It might have 136 00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:26.360 been a throwaway except for the strange appearance of teeth though, the man attempted 137 00:12:26.519 --> 00:12:33.789 to go to every doctor in every near by county to see if they could 138 00:12:33.870 --> 00:12:39.789 account for the strange object. None could possibly venture a guess, but the 139 00:12:39.830 --> 00:12:46.379 butting architect was advised that a man who could identify it had moved out west 140 00:12:46.740 --> 00:12:52.259 to Tacoma, Washington, in order to carry on with his strange medical explorations. 141 00:12:54.419 --> 00:12:58.460 And so the man left his nephew in charge of the town hall construction 142 00:12:58.850 --> 00:13:05.129 and headed West himself, obsessed by this point by the bizarre artifact. Upon 143 00:13:05.250 --> 00:13:11.490 his arrival in Tacoma, the man was directed by friendly town folk to the 144 00:13:11.570 --> 00:13:16.320 town hall under construction, where he found the good doctor charged with the task 145 00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:22.399 of identifying the oddity. The doctor hardly raised an eyebrow as the young architect 146 00:13:22.440 --> 00:13:28.110 handed it to him. My boy, he said, you have quite the 147 00:13:28.190 --> 00:13:33.669 find here, rare indeed. The young man felt a flutter of excitement. 148 00:13:35.029 --> 00:13:41.980 This is a Taratoma. Befuddled, the architect responded, I'm sorry, I've 149 00:13:43.019 --> 00:13:48.860 never heard of that before. The doctor smiled. A Taratoma is an ovarian 150 00:13:48.980 --> 00:13:54.379 Tuma. Those are lady pots, Yossima. Lad The make up of the 151 00:13:54.460 --> 00:14:00.610 or getting get so confused that it will sprout anything from teeth to hair to 152 00:14:00.889 --> 00:14:07.769 full bones. It's a medical wonder. The young man immediately vomited. The 153 00:14:07.889 --> 00:14:11.679 doctor and wavering told him, if you like a good gag, watch this. 154 00:14:13.159 --> 00:14:18.960 The doctor proceeded to slip the inexplicable find down into one of the walls 155 00:14:20.039 --> 00:14:28.190 under construction. Our little secret, right, HA, ha ha. The 156 00:14:28.309 --> 00:14:33.669 doctor died of a massive heart attack the next day. The architect never did 157 00:14:33.789 --> 00:14:39.179 make it back home. The two were the only ones who knew of the 158 00:14:39.259 --> 00:14:46.860 secret, except for young child who would overhurt the exchange, a child who 159 00:14:46.860 --> 00:14:54.129 has traumatized, a child who would forever be obsessed with horror, a child 160 00:14:54.850 --> 00:15:11.200 named Stephen, Stephen King. Thank you for listening to down to folk. 161 00:15:13.080 --> 00:15:16.320 This week's camp fire story was performed by Chad Brock, Raider of the perfect 162 00:15:16.440 --> 00:15:24.549 package podcast.
